Jason Koumas has retired from international football. The 29-year-old Wales midfielder announced his decision after talks with the manager John Toshack.

Koumas has a persistent hamstring injury – which will keep him out of Wales' World Cup qualifier with Russia on Wednesday – and had decided that for the sake of his club career, he needs to quit playing for his country. Koumas has been told by Roberto Martínez, his manager at Wigan Athletic, that he remains integral to his long-term plans.

The Wrexham-born midfielder made his Wales debut against Ukraine in 2001 and went on to win 34 caps, scoring 10 goals. He almost certainly would have retired ahead of next year's Euro 2012 qualifiers but with only away games with Finland and Liechtenstein to follow in Group Four, he decided now is the time.

Koumas's last match for his country has ended up being the disastrous home defeat to Finland in March, when Wales' World Cup qualification chances were effectively ended.

For Wales to pull off their miracle they need to beat Russia, and both Finland and Liechtenstein away next month, hope that the Russians continue to implode, and snatch second place behind Germany.

It is about as likely to happen as Chancellor Alistair Darling slashing income tax, but it doesn’t stop Collins calling for a significant step forward in the team’s development.

Manager John Toshack has rebuilt the Welsh side with young players from the successful Under-21 side and has admitted his disappointment that this World Cup qualifying attempt has faded out. A shock 2-0 home defeat by Finland in March effectively ended their threat as a Group Four qualifier.

But Collins also refers to defeats away to Russia (2-1) and Germany (1-0) where Wales played well but still did not get a point, as significant moments.

And his case now is that it is not enough for Wales to play well and lose with honour, they need to get points off the European giants of the game to qualify for a major tournament.

Collins said: “With the young players, they have definitely got to start delivering. We keep saying they’re young players but it’s got to come to the point where, myself included, we all step up to the plate and perform.
