There can be little doubt about it: France have been flirting with disaster throughout this World Cup qualifying campaign and, like a poker player about to get divorce papers from Lady Luck, fortune had to finally desert les Bleus at some stage.

Ironically, it came during one of the nation’s better performances over the last year, against Romania on Saturday, that the potentially decisive failure arrived.

Defeat against Austria around 12 months ago, just as the qualifying campaign was born, was certainly a set-back, but head coach Raymond Domenech would probably not have envisaged such a loss as a critical blow.

And it would not have been, had France not twice drawn with Romania, fighting back from 2-0 down in Constanta in late 2008 to salvage a draw, before being left frustrated at the Stade de France on Saturday evening when only a win would do to maintain any hope of an automatic berth in South Africa next summer.

Domenech’s men, though, have hardly instilled any confidence in their home crowd of late, toiling in several of their other qualification games.

Meanwhile, group leaders Serbia have shown fantastic consistency against the so-called ‘lesser ranked’ sides, the teams that France should have the quality to dispatch, if not with ease, at least with regularity. This may well prove vital in the final reckoning.

Twice talisman Franck Ribery had to intervene for les Bleus to defeat Lithuania by a pair of 1-0 scorelines around Easter. Even allowing for a fine performance from Zydrunas Karcemarskas in the opposing goal, nations ranked outside the top 50 in the world by FIFA should not prove such a testing obstacle for a France side laced with exciting attacking stars.

Even more astounding was the manner in which the French struggled against the Faroe Islands, a side admittedly bolstered by Brian Kerr’s appointment as head coach. True, the side from the North Atlantic archipelago are not the whipping boys they once were, but neither should they be considered a team strong enough to get to within one goal of les Bleus, as they did in Torshavn less than a month ago.

France have been crying out for some upbeat, smooth attacking performances for the last year and Saturday night was arguably the first time they displayed such qualities to their fans for any sustained period of time since their successful Euro 2008 qualifying march.

Full-backs Patrice Evra and Bacary Sagna flew forward early on as blue shirts pummelled the visiting goal. Lassana Diarra set the platform in his role as midfield sweeper, gathering possession and using it effectively. Further forward, the attacking midfielders were shifting the point of attack well, switching play from right to left and then back again if need be.

France looked an effective offensive machine, but Romanian stopper Danut Coman produced a couple of high class interventions to deny the hosts.

But, even before William Gallas’ knockdown from Yoann Gourcuff’s corner was smacked home by Thierry Henry at close range, France had begun to look a little short of ideas, as if questioning their strong start to the game, nervous that their effective probing would come to nothing, even if it continued for 90 minutes.

The moment we’ve all been waiting for is drawing near. There is little more than a week until the game Serbia plays against France, it’s only rival for the top spot in the group, and needless to say, one of the very best national teams in Europe. However, Serbia has reason for optimism, not fear: it occupies top spot in the group, and even if The French defeat Romania at home four days prior to this encounter, they’ll still be trailing two points behind Serbia. In other words, Serbia needs a win or a draw to stay firmly in the driving seat regarding direct qualification. Other than that, it is a noteworthy detail that Serbia has a winning streak in recent games, a “football renaissance” by my own words, dispatching all of it’s rivals in both competitive and friendly games (oops, friendly loss to Ukraine notwithstanding) ever since that loss in Paris last summer. Lithuania, Austria (x2), Cyprus, Romania, Sweden, Faroe Islands and South Africa have all been defeated and there’s a real feeling of optimism regarding this country’s football present and future. Contrary to what you might expect, Serbia is tipped by it’s fans to defeat France in this vital clash and confirm it’s presence in the next summer’s World Cup. Maybe that’s why all the tickets available via phone and the internet (44.000) were sold during the very first morning the sale had begun. Your blogger doesn’t like this, because it’s a big question whether he’ll be able to get himself a ticket at all, and for him as a devoted follower of the NT, that’s not very nice, is it? Anyway, here’s Antić’s list of players for the showdown the whole nation has been waiting for:
