Paraguay looks to book their place for South Africa while Argentina struggles to regain confidence after a bad result from the weekend against rivals Brazil.

Sitting in the same position just a week ago, coach Diego Maradona finds himself thinking of new ways to encourage his team to perform well. In what was almost considered a must win for Argentina on Saturday, a poor result at home in Rosario left the team and country with low spirits.

Where the teams stand

Now, Diego’s Albiceleste are more pressured than ever to get a result away from home. Currently in 4th with 22 points in the South American qualifying table, they are sitting dangerously close to 6th place (out of qualification) with Colombia and Ecuador just 2 points behind them.

Argentine native and Paraguayan coach Martino Gerardo, on the other hand, is in a more comfortable position with 27 points. This will not stop him from pushing his Albiroja for the 3 points, however, as a win will automatically qualify them along with Brazil, the first to qualify with the victory on Saturday.

Paraguay can seal their passage to South Africa

The recent victory in Bolivia was the result of a penalty goal by hero Salvador Cabañas. The veteran Club América player has been a key figure for Paraguay throughout qualifying and he will need to show more heroic efforts to defeat a pressured Argentina.

Cabañas will most likely be paired with younger forward Nelson Haedo Valdez (Borussia Dortmund). Together, the two have had little success recently but will continue to put pressure on the Argentina defense in hopes of creating scoring opportunities.

While victorious against a weaker Bolivian side (out of the running for South Africa), the Paraguayans will have their hands full with the Argentine offense thirsty for goals and a defense fiercely determined at preventing them.

Argentina will fight to stay alive

Lionel Messi (Barcelona) did not have the game that was expected of him against Brazil, and surely will be flying through players looking for that crucial goal. Central midfielders Javier Mascherano (Liverpool) and Juan Sebastián Verón (Estudiantes) will also need to provide more possibilities than they showed against Brazil.

Maradona, criticized for calling up so many local based players (10 in total), will need to evaluate his decisions carefully if he is to be victorious on Wednesday. An away win is not out of the question considering the outstanding talent at his disposition. He must continue to stay calm under the enormous pressure if he is to get results sufficient enough for qualification into the world’s greatest tournament.
