There can be little doubt about it: France have been flirting with disaster throughout this World Cup qualifying campaign and, like a poker player about to get divorce papers from Lady Luck, fortune had to finally desert les Bleus at some stage.

Ironically, it came during one of the nation’s better performances over the last year, against Romania on Saturday, that the potentially decisive failure arrived.

Defeat against Austria around 12 months ago, just as the qualifying campaign was born, was certainly a set-back, but head coach Raymond Domenech would probably not have envisaged such a loss as a critical blow.

And it would not have been, had France not twice drawn with Romania, fighting back from 2-0 down in Constanta in late 2008 to salvage a draw, before being left frustrated at the Stade de France on Saturday evening when only a win would do to maintain any hope of an automatic berth in South Africa next summer.

Domenech’s men, though, have hardly instilled any confidence in their home crowd of late, toiling in several of their other qualification games.

Meanwhile, group leaders Serbia have shown fantastic consistency against the so-called ‘lesser ranked’ sides, the teams that France should have the quality to dispatch, if not with ease, at least with regularity. This may well prove vital in the final reckoning.

Twice talisman Franck Ribery had to intervene for les Bleus to defeat Lithuania by a pair of 1-0 scorelines around Easter. Even allowing for a fine performance from Zydrunas Karcemarskas in the opposing goal, nations ranked outside the top 50 in the world by FIFA should not prove such a testing obstacle for a France side laced with exciting attacking stars.

Even more astounding was the manner in which the French struggled against the Faroe Islands, a side admittedly bolstered by Brian Kerr’s appointment as head coach. True, the side from the North Atlantic archipelago are not the whipping boys they once were, but neither should they be considered a team strong enough to get to within one goal of les Bleus, as they did in Torshavn less than a month ago.

France have been crying out for some upbeat, smooth attacking performances for the last year and Saturday night was arguably the first time they displayed such qualities to their fans for any sustained period of time since their successful Euro 2008 qualifying march.

Full-backs Patrice Evra and Bacary Sagna flew forward early on as blue shirts pummelled the visiting goal. Lassana Diarra set the platform in his role as midfield sweeper, gathering possession and using it effectively. Further forward, the attacking midfielders were shifting the point of attack well, switching play from right to left and then back again if need be.

France looked an effective offensive machine, but Romanian stopper Danut Coman produced a couple of high class interventions to deny the hosts.

But, even before William Gallas’ knockdown from Yoann Gourcuff’s corner was smacked home by Thierry Henry at close range, France had begun to look a little short of ideas, as if questioning their strong start to the game, nervous that their effective probing would come to nothing, even if it continued for 90 minutes.

The moment we’ve all been waiting for is drawing near. There is little more than a week until the game Serbia plays against France, it’s only rival for the top spot in the group, and needless to say, one of the very best national teams in Europe. However, Serbia has reason for optimism, not fear: it occupies top spot in the group, and even if The French defeat Romania at home four days prior to this encounter, they’ll still be trailing two points behind Serbia. In other words, Serbia needs a win or a draw to stay firmly in the driving seat regarding direct qualification. Other than that, it is a noteworthy detail that Serbia has a winning streak in recent games, a “football renaissance” by my own words, dispatching all of it’s rivals in both competitive and friendly games (oops, friendly loss to Ukraine notwithstanding) ever since that loss in Paris last summer. Lithuania, Austria (x2), Cyprus, Romania, Sweden, Faroe Islands and South Africa have all been defeated and there’s a real feeling of optimism regarding this country’s football present and future. Contrary to what you might expect, Serbia is tipped by it’s fans to defeat France in this vital clash and confirm it’s presence in the next summer’s World Cup. Maybe that’s why all the tickets available via phone and the internet (44.000) were sold during the very first morning the sale had begun. Your blogger doesn’t like this, because it’s a big question whether he’ll be able to get himself a ticket at all, and for him as a devoted follower of the NT, that’s not very nice, is it? Anyway, here’s Antić’s list of players for the showdown the whole nation has been waiting for:

Belgium must bounce back from their weekend defeat by Spain when they face Armenia in midweek, according to head coach Franky Vercauteren.

The Diables Rouges caused Spain all kinds of trouble in the first encounter between the two teams around a year ago, but they were thrashed 5-0 on Saturday evening by the reigning European champions.

As a result, the Belgians are no longer in the race for qualification for the 2010 World Cup, but Vercauteren still expects his men to do their utmost in the upcoming match against Armenia.

"The match against Armenia is important for the future of Belgian football. We kind of expected a loss against Spain, but a bad result against Armenia is unacceptable. We have to think of our reputation," Vercauteren told Sporza.
"I don't think that we have internal problems between the Anderlecht and Standard Liege players. You do not need to be best friends in a team, but you have to be willing to fight for each other. The players are professional enough to realise that."
Armenia missed their few chances and let the visitors score twice (and miss a penalty) to take a deserved win and collect all three points from Yerevan. Fortunately or unfortunately, this latest defeat increases Armenia’s chances for a less ‘aggressive’ Turkish side when they travel across the River Arax for a ‘fence-mending’ sporting event later this year.

Bosnia-Herzegovina’s 2-0 victory in a FIFA World Cup 2010 qualifier at the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium Saturday night proved a massive step for the Balkan outfit to finish their current campaign in the second place and hope for their first-ever World Cup finals qualification through a playoff. If successful, the rising Balkan team will leave their strong rival Turkey out of contention for one of the dozen or so European qualifying spots for the Soccer Mundial in South Africa next summer.

With only three rounds to go in the European Zone Group Five tournament, Bosnia-Herzegovina continue to hold a four-point lead over Turkey, World Cup 2002 third-place winner and Euro-2008 semifinalist. Their encounter in Zenica on Wednesday might decide who finishes as runner-up to reigning European champions Spain, the most likely winner of the Group, and progresses to the playoff stage.

Interestingly, Bosnia-Herzegovina’s victory in the September 9 qualifier will put the Balkan team out of reach for Turkey in the remaining two rounds of matches that will also include the Turkey-Armenia fixture in the middle of October, thus potentially taking off pressure sport-wise in an otherwise sensitive encounter in Bursa. (Though Turks are known to play aggressively all their matches, especially at home, regardless of match status.)

Armenia lost all chances for qualification early on, suffering several crushing defeats at the start of the campaign, including a 0-2 defeat from Turkey in Yerevan on September 6, 2008. That match, however, kick-started so-called ‘soccer diplomacy’ between the two historical foes that has so far resulted in the mutual agreement to start “internal political discussions” on two protocols on establishing diplomatic ties and developing bilateral relations. The accord between Ankara and Yerevan is expected to be signed when Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan visits Turkey on October 14 to attend the soccer match.

Soccer-wise, Armenia currently have only one point in seven matches. The team is at the bottom place in the six-nation qualifying group that also involves Belgium and Estonia. They look highly unlikely to catch up with Estonians in the remaining matches.

A group of Armenia fans attending the Saturday game in Yerevan felt so disappointed at the result that they held a banner saying “Stop Disgracing Us”. They also chanted demands for the resignation of the Football Federation president. Police moved quickly to remove the banner and prevent any possible aggressive behavior. They could not, however, “remove” the sense of disillusionment among thousands of fans at the stadium that lingered on during and after the game.

George Peat, the Scottish Football Association president, has yet to make up his mind whether George Burley will be kept on as manager should Scotland fail to qualify for the World Cup finals.

Scotland's 2-0 win over Macedonia on Saturday keeps them in contention for a play-off place in Group Nine, but Burley remains under pressure following some unimpressive results in the campaign.

They now face another crucial qualifier, against the group winners Holland, at Hampden on Wednesday.

Asked whether Burley would continue should Scotland lose, Peat told BBC Radio Five Live: "We haven't discussed that. Let's just wait until the games are all finished. We'll have a better idea after Wednesday. I haven't made up my mind one way or another.

"We hired George on a four-year contract and we said that halfway through, once the World Cup section had finished, we would sit down and have a talk to see how he felt. This is his first go at international management, and managers who have been with clubs and get into the routine of club management find it kind of strange when they don't get players on a day-to-day basis."

Peat also offered a less than glowing report of the job Burley had done in what he described "as a kind of partial transition period".

"When a new manager comes in he tries to change things. When Walter Smith came in after Berti Vogts left, Walter turned the whole place round and we went on a tremendous run," he added. "Alex McLeish came in with mainly the same players and kept the momentum going. We know what happens – players get close to an end, and the manager has to find new players.

"(Brown) is a strong character and he is desperate to play," Scotland head coach George Burley said of the Celtic midfielder, who scored his first international goal in Saturday's 2-0 victory over Macedonia. "He has been in getting treatment and it's not as bad as we first feared. I'm optimistic that he will be available for Wednesday night."

Saturday's win kept the Scots in the chase for the runners up place in Group 9, which has already been won by the Netherlands.

Amid speculation that the Dutch would field a weakened team having already secured its place at next year's finals, Scotland captain Darren Fletcher remained focused on the task at hand.

"When you've got no pressure, sometimes you can loosen up and perform better," the Manchester United midfielder said. "Everyone says 'Netherlands are through -- they won't care about this match', but any Netherlands player who plays in this game will be thinking: 'can I get in the team for the World Cup?'

"We can't control what Netherlands team turns up or how they play. All we can do is think of ourselves and prepare for the game in the right way."

Callum Davidson and James McFadden will not play a part in the tie as a result of a hamstring injury and suspension respectively.

The Scottish FA are investigating whether an appeal can be made against the yellow card for unsporting behavior that sees McFadden suspended for the game. But Burley has made late call-ups in the form of Gavin Rae and Graeme Dorrans.

Netherlands forward Dirk Kuyt has voiced the team's intention to win the game and seal a perfect win record in their group.

"It's only fair to give 100 percent to win the game," he said. "We can write some history and win every game in the group stage".

The same message was echoed by national coach Bert van Marwijk who confirmed his intention of fielding the strongest first team available to him.

The match against the Netherlands comes on the back of Scottish FA President George Peat issuing an apology to Scotland striker Chris Iwelumo following rash comments made concerning Iwelumo's miss against Norway last October.

"In trying to explain that there is such a fine line between success and failure in international football, I used the example of the Chris Iwelumo chance against Norway last October," Peat said of the Wolves striker, who missed an open goal from three meters. "This has been taken as a criticism of the player and I do regret this."

With the smallest group in the qualifying stages, Wednesday night will mark end to Group 9, which has only five teams.

A win or a draw will seal the a second place finish for the Scots. Should they lose, the match between Norway and Macedonia may decide who gains the runners up spot.

Kiev: Ukraine, who reached the last eight of the 2006 World Cup in Germany, come into their crucial 2010 World Cup qualifiers in a must-win position to keep their chances to join next year’s finals alive.

The former Soviet republic is currently third in the European qualifying Group Six, 10 points behind the group leaders England, who are seven points adrift of second-placed Croatia.

Ukraine, who will face group underdogs Andorra and fellow ex-Soviet state Belarus in September matches, have a game in hand and a chance to leapfrog the Croats, who will take on Belarus at home before visiting England.

Coach Alexei Mikhailichenko said he was still optimistic about his team’s chances for the group’s second place, adding, however, that displacing England from top spot looked almost impossible.

“England deservedly top our group. But our faith is still in our own hands,” Mikhailichenko said.

“We lost points in both our matches with Croatia that we could both win. We also had chances to clinch at least a point in London but lost concentration at the very end of the match and allowed John Terry to score the winner with just five minutes to go.”

Mikhailichenko said his squad would give its all right through to the end and would be boosted by the return of the team’s charismatic leader Andrei Shevchenko, 33, to his home club Dynamo Kiev.

“Sheva experienced lack of match practice in Chelsea and Milan,” the coach said. “I believe in Dynamo he will soon obtain the confidence that he needed so much.”

Meanwhile, 2012 European championship co-hosts Ukraine, criticised by the European ruling body UEFA for slow progress in its preparations for the event, are gradually improving the situation.

Ukraine Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has recently expressed her confidence in the country’s ability to be ready in time for hosting the European football extravaganza at top level.

“Those who are still in doubt that Ukraine will be ready to host Euro 2012 should visit the hosting cities and watch the progress in the construction of the event venues, airports, hotels and other infrastructure,” she said.

“We will definitely be ready to host the event even earlier than we were planning,” she said ahead of last Saturday’s opening ceremony of a brand new 50,000-seater stadium in the eastern Ukrainian sity of Donetsk.

England supporters may only be able to see Fabio Capello's side clinch qualification to the World Cup on the internet.

The national team will secure their place at South Africa 2010 by beating Croatia at Wembley on Wednesday night. But if they fail to overcome Slaven Bilic's men and Ukraine defeat Belarus on the same night, then the next chance England will get to make progress certain is away to Ukraine on 10 October.

However, the television broadcast rights for the encounter in Dnepropetrovsk were sold to Setanta by international football agency Kentaro and following the collapse of the Irish broadcaster, an alternative has yet to be found.

ITV, Sky and Channel Five have so far shown no interest in broadcasting the game and tentative discussions with the BBC have got nowhere. As such, there is the very real possibility of a TV blackout for the game.

"We have spoken to every traditional UK broadcaster and currently have no offer on the table," said Philipp Grothe, chief executive of Kentaro. "We therefore feel the internet is the most viable option to deliver an important England game directly to the fans.

"It will be the first time in history that an England game has had an exclusive web broadcast."

Grothe has instructed digital sport specialist Perform to market and stream the match online on a pay-per-view basis.

The company provided coverage of Manchester City and Tottenham matches in the Uefa Cup last year but having an important England qualifier available purely on the internet is a different matter entirely, not least because such a large number of supporters have no method of accessing such a medium.

However, as the away team, the FA are powerless to do anything to prevent it and can only hope some agreement is reached over the next month.

ITV have the rights to home England games and under the terms of their contract have taken over Setanta's broadcast rights for away friendlies, such as the one in Holland last month.
