Germany — Germany coach Joachim Loew admitted he was delighted with his side's performance after their 2-0 win over South Africa in Saturday's friendly as several of his rising stars shone.

After Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez put his side ahead in the first-half, Werder Bremen winger Mesut Oezil - who was the inspirational figure behind Germany's Under-21 side's captivating victory at the European Championships in late June - capped a fine performance with the second-half goal which killed off the Bafana Bafana's challenge.

Germany had struggled to a 2-0 win against Azerbaijan last month in Baku which left Loew far from happy with his side's performance, but he was pleased with what he saw here.

"We created many good chances and were much more fluid in our football than last time," said Loew, who picked up his 29th win in charge since he succeeded Jurgen Klinsmann as national coach in August 2006.

"We gave some young players a chance, in particular Mesut brought a lot of creativity to our game.

"He has an eye for finding players in a better position and has lots of potential."

With South Africa set to host the 2010 World Cup, their Brazilian coach Joel Santana said the Bafana Bafana had benefited from the experience against their opponents ranked fourth in the world.

"It was a very good match for us," he said.

"The South African team were against one of the strongest who are ranked in the top four.

"The game gave us exactly what we wanted: international experience.

"We gave a good account of ourselves and I am happy with the performance."

With Germany facing minnows Azerbaijan again in Hanover in a World Cup qualifier on Wednesday, Loew got the dominance he had demanded in the game's build-up with his side rarely troubled by the South Africans.

Gomez, playing as a lone striker, scored his 11th international goal midway through the first-half before 20-year-old Oezil showed great composure to score his first goal for Germany.

We beat Russia 2-0 (yes, I know it’s unlikely, but I’m playing fantasy football), which puts us six points behind them with two games to play. We then beat Finland away (believe me that’s possible because they’re nowhere near as good as we made them look at the Millennium), while Russia lose to Germany. Done deal.

That puts us three points behind Russia, going into the last game in Group Four. We beat Liechtenstein (if we can’t do that, we might as well give up), while they go to... Azerbaijan.

I know that should, and probably will be, a shoo-in for a point or three. But it would be a bit akin to Wales trying to stop England. The Azeri’s chance to put one over the old enemy. Get my drift.

So Russia lose, we each end up on 18 points... and Wales nick second spot courtesy of the better head-to-head record against them, having lost just 2-1 in Moscow.

Of course, at this point we lose in the play-offs to a dodgy penalty kick which hits the crossbar, bounces back off Wayne Hennessey’s backside and squirms about a centimetre over the line.

Bogota, Sep 7 (EFE) One person was killed and 29 others wounded when a man accidentally set off a grenade in downtown Medellin, the capital of the northwestern province of Antioquia, as people were celebrating Colombia’s World Cup qualifying win over Ecuador.

Initial reports said the blast occurred at 7.40 p.m. Saturday at San Antonio Park, where the man pulled the pin on the grenade as fans celebrated the Colombian squad’s 2-0 win over Ecuador at Medellin’s Atanasio Girardot Stadium and watched the game between Argentina and Brazil.

Six of the injured were treated at the scene and the rest were taken to hospitals in Medellin, said the city’s emergency management chief Camilo Zapata.

Four seriously injured people were taken to one of the city’s university hospitals, but one of them, identified as teacher Harold Moreno, died.

The blast occurred when a man improperly handled a grenade at a bar that draws large crowds on the weekends, setting it off when about 250 people were inside the establishment, said Medellin Metropolitan Police chief Col. Luis Eduardo Martinez.

However, Brazil were 3-1 ahead within two minutes when Kaka played a wonderfully-weighted pass into the path of Fabiano who sprinted around Nicolas Otamendi before chipping the ball over Andujar for his second goal of the tie.

Earlier, Brazil's chances of wrapping up qualification had been boosted when Colombia defeated Ecuador 2-0 in Bogota while Uruguay slumped to a 1-0 loss in Lima to bottom side Peru.

Jackson Martinez and Teofilo Gutierrez scored for Colombia in the last 10 minutes while Hernan Rengifo claimed Peru's winner four minutes from time to register just his team's second win in 15 qualifiers.

Colombia, who moved into fifth place in the table, just outside the four automatic qualifying places, had their celebrations cut short when central defender Fabian Vargas picked up a serious leg injury which will rule him out of Wednesday's game with Uruguay.

Paraguay, meanwhile, boosted their hopes of qualifying with a 1-0 win over Bolivia.

Salvador Cabanas, with a penalty on the stroke of half-time, gave Paraguay the three points which also ended Bolivia's slim hopes of qualifying for the finals.

Michael Bradley
With first-choice centerbacks Oguchi Onyewu (suspended) and Jay DeMerit (injured) watching from the sidelines, the elder Bradley was forced to trot out a back four that had little experience playing together. The manager relied upon his son to focus on his defensive responsibilities, and he came through with timely tackles and quality distribution. Although Bradley did have some bad giveaways in the second half, they didn't prove to be costly. The central midfielder's defensive role freed up his partner Benny Feilhaber to show off his offensive prowess and creativity. The combination didn't always work, but the duo showed enough to earn another chance together. Expect them to line up next to each other on Wednesday in Trinidad.

Charlie Davies
The striker didn't score but he was the U.S.'s most potent attacker, terrorizing El Salvador's backline all night. If a couple of bounces go differently, Davies could easily have been man of the match. He's not afraid to attack in one-on-one situations, and showed the skills, speed, and confidence to win those battles.

But Davies does more than simply put his head down and charge toward the goal. After repeatedly beating his man to the touchline, he slotted a number of wonderful balls along the ground that just missed the feet of American attackers. He and Altidore are developing an understanding that's only going to grow with more time together. Ladies and gentlemen, meet your starting strikers in South Africa.

Losers

Brian Ching
The Houston Dynamo is the odd man out of the new-look U.S. frontline. I suspect he'll continue to get spot starts in matches where Bradley opts to take a more defensive formation -- in Honduras on October 10th, perhaps -- but given the persistent brilliance of Davies and the shocking strike-rate of Altidore, who leads the team in scoring during this qualifying cycle, Ching's days as a fixture in the Starting XI are done. Some (most?) U.S. fans would argue this move should have happened months ago, but the big Hawaiian was the best option until very recently. He had a nice run in with Stars and Stripes first team, but it's rapidly coming to an end.

Jonathan Bornstein
The entire U.S. backline looked shaky on Saturday night, but its left back suffered most. Bornstein, who lost his starting slot when Carlos Bocanegra slid over, didn't do himself any favors in his return to the American formation. His backwards, over-the-head "clearance" fell directly to Rodolfo Zelaya in the U. S. box and gave El Salvador its early lead. Bornstein did improve slightly -- making a couple of one-on-one stops -- but he was also consistently beaten down El Salvador's right flank. The Chivas USA jack-of-all-trades worked his way up field on occasion, but lacks the crossing acumen of Jonathan Spector, his foil on the other side of the pitch. Quite simply, Bornstein struggles to compete at the international level.

Kyle Beckerman
Both Gold Cup standouts Beckerman and Stuart Holden entered Saturday night's match as second half substitutes. While the Dynamo midfielder looked dangerous on his fresh legs, the dreadlocked Real Salt Lake star struggled in front of his home crowd. He played just 10 minutes, but seemed to turn the ball over every time he touched it. Given the U.S.'s depth at central midfield, Beckerman might not get too many more opportunities to impress. Against El Salvador, he did not.

Veteran striker Jan Koller left the Czech national team on Sunday after an abortive international comeback in Saturday's 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifier against Slovakia, national team spokesman Petr Sveceny said.

"Nobody will persuade me again," Koller said after the match in Bratislava, in which he was outshadowed by substitutes Milan Baros from Galatasaray and Tomas Necid from CSKA Moscow. "I would only be in the way. It was a mistake to come back against Slovakia," added Koller, replaced by Baros after 55 minutes on Saturday.

The 36-year-old lanky striker, now plying his trade with Russia's Samara but a standout from the Czech side that reached the UEFA EURO 2004 semi-finals, said goodbye to international football after EURO 2008, but national team manager Ivan Hasek persuaded him to return for the Slovakia tie.

The Czech Republic had to fight back twice in a thrilling second half to hold Group Three leaders Slovakia to a 2-2 draw on Saturday. ith three games to go, the Czechs are fifth in the group with nine points from seven matches, trailing the Slovaks - their partners in the former Czechoslovak federation - by seven points.

Koller, the all-time leading scorer for the Czechs with 55 goals in 91 matches, will miss next Wednesday's qualifier against minnows San Marino in Uherske Hradiste in eastern Czech Republic. But the game may offer another comeback as Arsenal midfielder Tomas Rosicky, sidelined with injuries since January 2008, is staying with the team after watching the Slovak game from the stands.

WAMCO, the makers of Peak Milk are on their way to Abuja for Sunday’s World Cup cracker against Tunisia.. They will be there to support Eagles. Peak Milk, their product is the official milk of the Eagles.

And among other things, they will be in Abuja with their symbolic cheque for $5,000.
The money will be for whoever emerges the Man Of The Match.
“Peak Milk has been there for the Super Eagles for long now and their contribution to football is highly commendable,” said Mike Itemuagbor of Pamodzi, the sports marketers of the Nigeria Football Federation.

Osaze Odemwingie, Chidi Odiah, Ike Uche, Nwankwo Kanu are among the players who, at different times in the past, won the Peak Milk prize. The winner of the prize is free to pledge or donate the prize or part of it to any charity organisation of his choice. The Presidential Task Force on 2010 World Cup is also offering $10,000 as victory bonus to each player.

Nigeria team officials have shrugged off the knee injury that Nwankwo Kanu picked up in training leading up to Sunday's World Cup showdown in Abuja, insisting the durable Portsmouth ace will still have a role to play in the crunch tie.

There were two other injury scares involving FC Sion defender Yusuf Mohammed and goalkeeper Austin Ejide, but both players have been certified fit for the match.

This means that Nigeria will have a full compliment of their players for this all-important encounter against Tunisia, the outcome of which many observers see as crucial in producing the overall winner of Group Two and qualifier for next year's World Cup in South Africa.

Tunisia lead the standings with seven points from four matches, while Nigeria are second on five points. Kenya are placed third with three points and Mozambique have recorded a point.
