On Wednesday, September 16th, Arsenal come up against Standard Liege at the Stade de Sclessin.

For the Gunners’ manager Arsene Wenger, it will be a difficult mission as he will be without Arshavin and Eduardo da Silva.

Arsenal have qualified into the group stages of the Champions League yet again. But unlike the other years, their way through wasn’t without controversy.

Their 2-0 victory away to Celtic didn’t spark up any debate, but their 3-1 home win provoked a lot of criticism.

After the unpopular issue of diving involving Croatia’s Eduardo, one may ask if the Gunners really deserve their place in the Champions League this season.

Either way, Arsenal are back in Europe and Arsene Wenger is determined to show the rest that his squad are now ready to lift the trophy.

The French manager might have the services of captain Cesc Fabregas, Gallas, and Bendtner at his disposal come Wednesday, but he will miss Arshavin and Eduardo who has been suspended by UEFA for deceiving the referee against Celtic.

Arshavin’s absence is due to injury. The Russian featured for his country during the international break despite having just recovered from illness. Speaking over this issue, Arsene Wenger said earlier:

''We lost Arshavin, who played with Russia last night and should not have played.

“He will be out for Saturday, for Wednesday and certainly as well for Wigan. I took him out at Manchester United because of a groin problem.

''He did not play in Russia's first game, but played last night against Wales. He should not have played and is injured.

"You can say a lot about it, but it does not do a lot,'' he concluded.

Anyway, Arsenal could benefit from the return of Thomas Rosicky in order to compensate the loss of the suspended Eduardo.

There is a sense that the game will be very difficult for both sides. Although Arsenal will go in as favorites, Arsene Wenger will want his boys to concentrate on picking up all the three points.

Standard Liege may not succumb to the power of the Gunners as many would expect. Due to the fact that Arsenal know how to play a sweet and mesmerizing passing game, Standard Liege might opt to become very physical.

Moreover, they could benefit from a probable strict officiating against Arsenal following Eduardo’s diving incident against Celtic.

Standard Liege failed to reach the group stages of the Champions League last season after dramatically losing to Liverpool in the qualifying rounds.

Can they take their revenge on another English club?
